Voting in local elections is important now more than ever. Lots of people underestimate the power of local governemt, and state government. A lot of the policies that affect us on a daily basis are passed by our local governemnts. Participating in local elections allows us to vote for the people that will directly address our needs and wants. Some things that local governemnts have control over is:

  • Majority of local taxes paid goes to fund education, and the school board decides on how that money gets spent. So vote for school committee memebrs!
  • The city is in control of fixing potholes and a lot of things constrction!
  • The District attorney has a very powerful job of deciding on who gets to go to jail and get incriminated. This is a very important job, whic is why it's important for you to vote for your local prosecutor.
  • Congressional electionas are also very important. They occur every 2 years, and in 2020 all 435 seats are up for election.

  • As of January , 2019 there were 45 democrats, 53 republicans, and 2 independent in senate.
  • In the House of representatives, there were 232 democrats, 197 republicans, 1 libretarian, and 5 vacancies.

  • Since Congress is made up of the senate and the house, they have a lot of power, in fact congress is the most powerful branch of govevernmnet out of the executive and judicial branch. This is why it is VERY important that you go out and vote for congress memebers, sentators, and representatives, becasue they will be making and passing a majority of the laws and policies.
